Ras Mohammed - Jackfish Alley

Off the very Southern tip of Ras Mohammed are several dives loosely know as “Ras”. It takes about 1 hour to reach Ras Mohammed from Sharm El Sheikh. It’s designated by the Egyptian government as the protected National Park of Ras Mohamed. The name stems from the word Ras, Arabic for headland, or cape, and the fact that at a certain time of day, when viewed from the right angle, the cliffs which we know today as Shark Observatory appear to form the outline of a face that is widely regarded as the face of the prophet Mohamed.

Jackfish Alley (also called Fisherman’s Bank). This is a dive that can be made in several different ways and a drift dive like most of the dives in Ras Mohammed. It can be made from south to north or north to south all depending on the currents, you can stay on the inside reef or for the more advanced divers venture to the outside reef. Its famous for the Jackfish that congregate here, hence the name. Often huge Tuna, Barracuda, Turtles and a resident White Tip Shark can also be spotted.

The northern end of the site features a downward sloping wall with lots of interesting things to see as the wall is porous and houses many life forms. There are also a number of caves with different entrance and exit points.

Towards the south, lies a sandy coral-covered plateau. Further south, the plateau narrows into an “alley” where white tip sharks can often be found on the sandy plateau.
