Khao Lak is one of Thailand’s main starting points for diving in the northern Andaman Sea. Dive trips from the area provide access to the Similan Islands, Surin Islands, Richelieu Rock and other offshore sites known for reefs, pinnacles and varied marine life.
Most diving is done by boat, with both day trips and liveaboard routes available during the main diving season.
The main diving season around Khao Lak runs from mid-October to mid-May, when the Similan and Surin marine parks are generally open to visitors. The best overall conditions are usually found between November and April, with calmer seas and drier weather.
Outside the main season, access to offshore marine parks is restricted and many operators reduce or stop their diving schedules. Exact opening and closing dates can change, so it is worth checking current conditions before travelling.
Water temperatures are generally warm, usually around 27–29°C at offshore dive sites. Visibility varies by site and conditions, but can range from around 10 to 30 metres or more during good periods.
Some sites offer relatively relaxed reef diving, while deeper pinnacles and exposed offshore locations can have stronger currents and are better suited to experienced divers.
The dive areas reached from Khao Lak are known for a mix of reef life and larger marine species. Divers may encounter reef sharks, barracuda, turtles, moray eels, nudibranchs and large schools of tropical fish.
Manta rays and whale sharks are occasionally seen around offshore sites such as Richelieu Rock and Koh Bon, but encounters are never guaranteed. Richelieu Rock is also known for smaller marine life including seahorses, pipefish and shrimp.
Most diving from Khao Lak focuses on offshore areas, so trips are usually organised through local dive centers as full-day boat trips or multi-day liveaboards. The Similan Islands and Richelieu Rock are among the best-known destinations reached from the Khao Lak area.
