Fantasy Reef
Fantasea Reef is a vibrant and rewarding dive site that showcases much of what makes diving in Puerto Galera so special. Its varied underwater landscape combines colourful coral formations, reef-covered slopes and sandy areas where patient divers can search for smaller marine life.
The reef supports an impressive variety of tropical fish, including anthias, butterflyfish, angelfish, damselfish and wrasse. Schools of jacks are frequently seen moving above the reef, while turtles may be encountered feeding or resting among the corals. For macro enthusiasts and underwater photographers, the sandy patches and coral formations can reveal nudibranchs, shrimps, crabs, gobies and other fascinating small creatures. As with every natural dive site, sightings and conditions vary from day to day, making each visit slightly different.
Fantasea Reef is suitable for divers with a range of experience levels. Its combination of reef scenery, schooling fish and macro subjects makes it an enjoyable recreational dive as well as an excellent location for photography. Calm conditions can allow divers to slow down and explore the reef carefully, while changes in current may bring increased fish activity and passing marine life.
Fantasea Reef is just one of the many diverse dive sites found around Puerto Galera. The area is recognised internationally for its exceptional marine biodiversity, with more than 35 dive sites located within easy reach of Sabang. Many are only a short five-to-eight-minute boat ride away, allowing divers to experience several completely different underwater environments in a single day.
Puerto Galera offers something for almost every diver, from gentle coral gardens and sandy macro sites to dramatic walls, wrecks, swim-throughs and exhilarating drift dives. Famous locations include the Canyons, Hole in the Wall, Sabang Wrecks, Alma Jane, West Escarceo and Kilima Steps. The region is particularly celebrated for its remarkable variety of marine life, including frogfish, seahorses, octopuses, mantis shrimps, nudibranchs, turtles and large schools of reef fish. Seasonal and occasional encounters may also include thresher sharks, eagle rays and other pelagic species.
For an even bigger underwater adventure, Verde Island can be reached by speedboat from Puerto Galera. Located in the Verde Island Passage—widely regarded as the centre of the world’s centre of marine biodiversity—it is known for spectacular coral-covered walls, dense schools of fish and exhilarating currents.
Whether you enjoy relaxed reef diving, searching for rare macro subjects, photographing colourful marine life or experiencing fast-moving drifts, Fantasea Reef and the wider Puerto Galera area offer an outstanding variety of diving within a remarkably compact destination.
