Snakebay
🗺️ Overview
Snake Bay, located in the quiet fishing village of Boca Sami on the west coast of Curaçao, is a relaxed and accessible shore dive site known for its gentle conditions and healthy coral reef. The site is suitable for beginner to intermediate divers and offers an easy beach entry. Despite its name, Snake Bay is not associated with snakes — the nickname comes from the many moray eels that inhabit the reef.
🌊 Entry & Conditions
- Entry type: Shore entry from a small sandy beach
- Entry notes: The most stable entry point is on the right side of the small pier, as the slope toward the water can be slippery
- Typical visibility: 20–30 meters
- Current: Generally mild, occasionally variable
- Best time to dive: Morning hours for the calmest surface conditions
The sandy bottom slopes gradually until you reach the drop‑off at around 9–10 meters, where the reef begins. During calm seas, a short surface swim is enough to reach the wall. When waves increase, descending early and following the sandy plateau underwater is more comfortable.
🐠 Underwater Highlights
- Depth range: 5–40 meters
- Reef type: Sloping reef with a 45‑degree angle
- Marine life: Moray eels, turtles, schooling fish, parrotfish, macro species
- Photography: Suitable for both wide‑angle and macro
- Special features: Healthy hard corals, large sponges, and a diverse mix of reef structures
Snake Bay’s reef is known for its excellent condition, with vibrant coral formations and plenty of marine life. Moray eels are frequently spotted, and turtles often cruise through the area. Macro lovers will enjoy searching for small critters hidden among the corals.
